The History…..

In 1982 Sinbads on Wharf Road Newcastle relocated to 129 Lambton Road, Broadmeadow as an established and well-known fish and chip shop. Two years later, Sinbads was sold and was renamed Anchors Seafood. Anchors soon became a household name in Newcastle for its Seafood Restaurant, Fresh Fishmarket and Takeaway. During this time “Lobsterfest” was born as was “Archie” the Lobster – the famous Anchors mascot – seen at local football matches and Newcastle events.  Anchors still sometimes brings Archie out on special occasions!

In November 2006 Anchors Seafood was in need of a new fresh life and was sold to Paul & Tracey Smith. Paul & Tracey often dined out with their three young children and felt there was a lack of “real”  family friendly dining in Newcastle and set out to reinvent Anchors Seafood as THE family friendly alternative for Newcastle. Unfortunately, 6 months after buying their first business, Newcastle was hit with the worst floods in 100 years and Anchors sustained serious and heartbreaking damage. Anchors was closed for 3 ½ months while building repairs could be carried out.

Anchors Seafood emerged totally renovated inside and out and Paul & Tracey worked hard on making their dream a reality in welcoming families and regulars back to the new Anchors.

Anchors Seafood has been nominated every year for “Family Restaurant of the Year” through Restaurant & Caterers Australia and in 2008 and 2009 were a proud Finalist in this Category. In 2010, the hard work and dedication of the Anchors Team, saw Anchors Seafood Broadmeadow awarded – WINNER – Newcastle/Hunter Region Family Restaurant of the Year, WINNER – New South Wales Family Restaurant of the Year and WINNER – NATIONAL Family Restaurant of the Year. Anchors is the only Newcastle Restaurant to have received this National recognition.

Recently announced (July) Anchors was again awarded with WINNER – Newcastle/Hunter Region Family Restaurant of the Year 2011 and Finalist for the 2011 NSW/National Awards.

All at Anchors Seafood were very proud to be recognised on a National level and feel they were truly awarded for their efforts in making families feel welcome when dining out with children. Anchors does not boast a “games room” or “kids corner” , our philosophy on a great family dining experience is having your children entertained with our fish-themed games, puzzles, colouring etc, while enjoying a great meal out together as a family unit. Anchors Magician, Richard Paddon, has entertained young and young-at-heart for over  21 years and is a family favourite on the 1st Saturday of each month.

Anchors Seafood is unique to Newcastle. The Restaurant is the only Seafood Restaurant in Newcastle supplied by their own Fresh Seafood Market which also sells to the public 6 days per week. Anchors Takeaway is cooked-fresh-to-order and uses the highest quality seafood available for their extensive Takeaway Menu. Restaurant meals are also available through Takeaway and are very popular. Anchors is “coeliac-friendly” and always has many options available for our customers.

Anchors Seafood source their extensive fresh seafood from local suppliers and support many local businesses daily. All our sauces, salads and desserts are made fresh on-premise. We believe in our product and take pride in supplying our customers with the best quality produce available.

Anchors Seafood has seen many changes in dining habits in Newcastle over its 28 year history, but we believe our fresh seafood, simple, but extensive menu and great service is the reason Anchors is a Newcastle Icon and a unique institution. Word-of-mouth is our only form of advertising!
